Engine oil is a specially formulated lubricant used in internal combustion engines to ensure smooth functioning and protect engine components. It is made from base oils (mineral, synthetic, or semi-synthetic) and blended with chemical additives to enhance performance. Engine oil circulates through the engine, forming a protective film over metal surfaces to reduce friction, wear, and overheating.
Purposes of Engine Oil:
- Reduces friction between engine parts
- Cools engine components by dissipating heat
- Cleans the engine by carrying away dirt and debris
- Protects metal parts from rust and corrosion
- Seals gaps to maintain compression in cylinders
Uses of Engine Oil:
- Used in car and motorcycle engines
- Applied in trucks and heavy-duty vehicle engines
- Essential for generator engines
- Used in lawnmowers and small engine machines
- Used in marine and industrial engine systems
Types of Engine Oil:
1. Monograde
Description: Monograde oil has a single viscosity rating. It is suitable for use in either hot or cold temperatures, but not both, as it doesn’t adapt to temperature changes.
Uses: Mainly used in older engines, generators, and machines that run in constant temperature conditions
2. Multigrade
Description: Multigrade oil has two viscosity ratings, meaning it flows well in cold temperatures and also provides protection at high temperatures. It adjusts to temperature changes, offering better performance.
Uses: Commonly used in modern cars, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles that operate in varying climates.
